2020 WASSCE results: Over 49,000 candidates fail Maths
Over 40,000 WASSCE candidates in Ghana failed their Core Math paper
Exactly 73,243 also failed their Integrated Science paper
In total, 67 percent of candidates had A1 in Mathematics
A press statement from the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) shows that 49,721 candidates of the 2020 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) in Ghana had F9 in Mathematics.
Even Though the performance of Ghanaian candidates have improved this year, the performance of students in Maths and Science continues to be a problem. In fact, 73,243 Ghanaian candidates also failed in Integrated Science. In total, 375,763 candidates took part in the 2020 examinations from Ghana.
The poor performance in Mathematics and Science continues to be an issue of concern to Ghanaian educational authorities. Even Though innovative programs and incentives have been put up by the government, it seems a chunk of Ghanaian students are just not either interested or versed in the subject.
The good news is that 67 percent of candidates who sat for the Core Mathematics paper scored A1 in the subject with 52 percent scoring A1 in Integrated Science. This makes the 2020 WASSCE one of the best in recent history – especially under the Free Education Policy by the government.
